The United States is discussing the possibility of nuclear disarmament with Moscow and Beijing, Donald Trump said in an interview with Newsmax. According to the US president, Washington would like to achieve denuclearization, if possible. Reuters reported his remarks.

“I would gladly pursue denuclearization if it were possible. But we are indeed holding talks about it with Russia and China,” Interfax quoted him as saying. Trump added that the parties “talk a lot” about reducing nuclear weapons, but provided no further details.

According to Newsmax, the US president discussed the issue with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump suggested, however, that Beijing might be less interested in disarmament because China’s nuclear arsenal remains smaller than those of the United States and Russia. He also expressed the view that China could catch up with the United States in this regard within five years.
