Donald Trump has blocked the application of key restrictions provided for by the “Graham law.” The measures were due to take effect by October 18, but on the evening of October 16 the US president signed a decree allowing new sanctions and tariffs not to be introduced for now. He justified the decision by the country’s national interests.
Trump’s decision affects, among other things, tariffs on Russian goods and measures against countries purchasing Russian oil and gas. The law, signed by the US president in September, provided for the introduction of restrictions within a month, but at the same time allowed the president to waive their application with appropriate justification before Congress.
“I have presented to Congress confirmation that the issuance of such an exemption currently serves the national interests of the United States,” the document says.
