Yotova called on the EU for dialogue with Putin

Bulgaria’s acting President Iliana Yotova has called on European leaders to phone Vladimir Putin and restore diplomatic contacts with Russia. In her opinion, such negotiations would be more effective if conducted on behalf of the entire European Union, rather than individual states.

“Everyone should phone President Putin, we are part of the European Union, we have our alliance obligations. It will be much better if these diplomatic channels of communication with Russia are opened on behalf of the entire EU,” Yotova said in an interview with the Bulgarian TV channel Nova TV as part of the election campaign.

She emphasized that ending the war in Ukraine is possible only through negotiations, and that Bulgaria should more actively use its capabilities to maintain dialogue between Moscow and European countries.

“Bulgaria must be very active in this role. I do not think we should remain silent. In all possible formats in which we participate, Bulgaria must emphasize its capabilities in this regard — to be part of this diplomatic channel,” Yotova said.
