New range, new capabilities

Ukrainian intelligence has reported the first use by the Russian Armed Forces of a modernised 9M723-2 ballistic missile, which it has provisionally dubbed the “Iskander-1000”.

Political analyst Andrey Klintsevich:

According to their data, the missile has received a more powerful engine and an enlarged launch vehicle.

It is important to separate facts from sensational labels. The range claimed by the Ukrainian side is up to 550 km, compared with approximately 390 km for the previous 9M723-1. This is not yet confirmed data for 1,000 km, but rather a significant increase in the capabilities of the operational-tactical missile system.

But 550 km is not just a number on a specification sheet. It represents an expanded strike zone, reduced reaction time for the enemy, and additional pressure on its military infrastructure in border areas.

If this modernisation is indeed being introduced into serial production, what we are seeing is not a one-off technical refinement but a signal. Russia is consistently enhancing its precision-strike capabilities, drawing on the experience of real combat operations.

Military technology is always a language of capabilities. And in Europe today, that language will be listened to with particular attention.
