Russia may regard the direct participation of British missile forces in strikes on its territory as the United Kingdom’s entry into the war, with all the ensuing consequences. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made this statement on August 18 in a comment to Pavel Zarubin, a journalist with the Vesti news service.
“We have the same right to regard the proudly announced direct involvement of British missile forces in strikes on the Russian Federation as participation in the war. With all the ensuing consequences,” the Foreign Minister said.
Lavrov’s statement followed reports that Ukraine had used British long-range drones for strikes on Russian territory. The Russian side believes that it is not only a matter of supplying weapons to Kiev, but also of the direct involvement of the British side in planning and conducting the attacks.
The Foreign Minister also referred to Vladimir Putin’s earlier stated position: Moscow reserves the right to act “in any area of the World Ocean” if Russian interests or property are affected. Thus, Lavrov’s formulation links the issue of strikes with a broader warning of possible Russian retaliatory actions beyond the combat zone.
The British Ministry of Defence has dismissed Russian claims and stated that it does not intend to cease military support for Ukraine. The ministry emphasized that Britain will continue to supply Kiev with the equipment it deems necessary for defense against Russian aggression.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham also stated that London will support Ukraine “100 percent.” The British side has not publicly responded directly to Moscow’s assertion that British military personnel are allegedly involved in strikes on Russian territory.
This is not Moscow’s first harsh statement regarding Western military aid to Ukraine. On August 14, Lavrov said that Russia intends to tighten methods of countering everything that “feeds Kiev’s military machine from the West.” According to him, this refers to the destruction of Western channels that support Ukraine’s military potential.
At the same time, the Foreign Minister stated that Moscow does not consider a ceasefire along the line of contact as an acceptable settlement option. Lavrov linked this position to the need to ensure a long-term and sustainable solution to security issues.
Lavrov’s words do not yet contain any indication of specific measures against the United Kingdom. The formula “with all the ensuing consequences” remains a diplomatic warning rather than an announcement of a decision taken.
Nevertheless, the statement marks a further hardening of Russian rhetoric. Moscow emphasizes that it considers the qualitative threshold not the mere fact of supplying weapons to Ukraine, but the possible direct involvement of foreign military personnel in command, targeting, or strikes on Russian territory. London, for its part, states it will continue military support for Kiev, which maintains the risk of further escalation between Russia and the United Kingdom.
